How can I keep an HP printer from running a test page every time I turn it on?

I have two HP inkjet printers and they both want to run a test page when I turn them on--which wastes a lot of ink, paper and time. The one I am currently using didn't run a test page except when I put in a new cartridge, but for the last week it wants to run a test every time I turn it on. I can't leave it on all day because I need to conserve power. I want to turn it on just when I need to print.
